7 Growth Stages and its Response to Emotional Development

Emotional development is the emergence of experience, expression, understanding, and regulation of emotions from birth. It constitutes the growth and change in these capacities throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.

Emotional Development in relation to Age Period

In 1956, Psychiatrist Erik Erikson developed Eight Stages of Development where he describes the different socialization stages a human undergoes. These eight stages include developing hope, will, purpose, competence, fidelity, love, care, and wisdom.

Starting from childhood, these stages last well into adulthood and forms the crux of emotional development in an individual. Let us now look briefly into the relationship between age and emotional development.

1. Infancy (0- 1½ years)

This is the period where the major emotional development is learning basic trust. The child is dependent on their caregiver who nurtures and loves them. Therefore, a well-handled child develops trust, hope, and a basic optimism towards life. Failure by the caregiver to perform the same can lead to the child being cynical and insecure.

2. Early Childhood (1½-3 years)

In this period there is an emergence of self-awareness and consciousness of own emotional responses. In this age, the “well-parented” child emerges self-assured and proud of their newfound control and freedom. This brings with itself initiative. The other side of the coin are tantrums and the stubbornness that comes with a stormy self.

3. Preschool (3-5 years)

This age brings with itself purpose. It initiates imagination, cooperation, teamwork, and a lot of awareness and insight into others’ feelings. The other side of this age group is gripped by guilt, is fearful, doesn’t stand out. They’re also restricted in imagination.

4. Early Elementary School (5-7 years)

Children in this age group adopt a cool emotional front in front of their peers. They are self-conscious, relate with their peers, and learn to follow rules with systemic extracurricular activities. At this stage, children are either trusting, full of initiative, purpose and ideas or they’re left feeling inferior. Children can also be mistrusting, doubtful, and experience inferiority as a result of the earlier psychological crisis.

5. Middle Childhood (7-10 years)

Middle childhood is an age group where children either solves a problem or distances themselves from it. This difference is based on the amount of control they have over a situation. Therefore, this is the time when children develop expressive behavior to balance relationships. The other side of this coin is a kid staying alone and emotionally closed off to people.

6. Preadolescence (10-13 years)

This age group begins to understand social norms and has increased social awareness and sensitivity. They differentiate in genuine expression between close trusted friends and peers. However, a mistrusting child is doubtful towards the future. They prefer being alone and therefore, try their best to blend in with the crowd.

7. Adolescence (13+ years)

This age group is looking for answers to the question “Who am I?”. They mature and want to experiment. Children at this age have a lot of questions that might be hard to answer. Consequently, they may experience some role identity crises and acquire self–certainty as opposed to self-doubt. They are very aware of their emotions and learn to cope insightfully. There is a development of integrity and moral character.

The emotional development of a person is unique to each individual as the situations presented to everyone are different. No two people have to face the same set of situations that in itself makes them who they are. Understanding these stages will help parents and teachers teach and help learn emotional development in a more effective manner.

  • Skill in comprehending that inside emotional status need not relate to outer appearance, equally in oneself and others, and at a more mature altitude the ability to recognize that one’s emotional-expressive actions may impact another and take this into account in one’s self-presentation approach.

  • The ability for adaptive coping with stressful emotions utilizing self-regulatory approaches that improve the amount or duration of such emotional states.

Smartphones have become our constant companion. We carry it with us throughout the day allowing ourselves to be interrupted by messages and notifications. The internet can both connect and disconnect us from the world. We put our immediate interactions with our friends and relatives on hold when we get a notification.
People who are busy on their phones either scrolling or checking news feeds and updates on their social platforms with a forward-leaning posture is a common sight these days.
New algorithms, which are updated regularly to individualize the users’ feed are a reason for social media addiction amongst users.
It is not common knowledge that the data collected regarding every social media user in respect to the pictures and posts they interact with is used to tailor and curate their feed with more and more relevant content which is based on their previous preferences.

The AI used by social media networks can be responsible for either increasing stress, depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders, or aggravating the aforementioned conditions. Many people are faced with sleep disorders due to the emission of blue light from phone screens, and diseases like Nomophobia, which is a fear of being without your phone have become more commonplace. How to mitigate yourself from getting caught in the ‘Web’

  • Adjust your notification settings: You can turn off notifications for non-essential apps. When a new app asks permission for notification, you have the option to deny it. You also have the option of putting your phone on silent so that you can avoid those pesky notifications.
  • Don’t use your phone as an alarm clock: Phones can be used for a myriad of things, one of them being to serve the purpose of an alarm clock. Instead of using your phone as an alarm, try using a conventional alarm clock instead. They’re louder and can get the same job done. Using our phones the moment we begin our day sets in motion a routine of depending on our phones that is hard to break.
  • Use a time tracking app: Several apps are focused on this newfound sense of ‘Digital Wellbeing’. Some of which even allow us to know for ourselves how much time we spend on each app that is installed on our phone and also having ‘Focus’ modes that prevent you from accessing certain apps within a predetermined time frame. The use of such applications can help you discover which app you spend most of your time on and make a decision for yourself if the said app is worth that much time.
  • Use voice-recognition instead of the search box: Escape the search box. If you do have to search for something, use voice-recognition. By doing so you will be safe from suggestions while searching.

Instead of checking our phones every few minutes, we should try and discover where best to dedicate our time. Innovative and meaningful activities that can help build our personality and be more creative can aid in boosting productivity. A change of habit or routine can also go a long way in making us forget about our phones.

An update to our age-old education system has been seen as long overdue.

We are still following the same education system used hundreds of years ago based on the industrial revolution model. The education system endorses mugging up the entire theory of our core subjects with the sole objective of passing the exams. Such a faulty system that educates students using the above methodology is redundant as it mainly focuses only on memorizing theory, instead of grasping concepts.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, Space X, and the Boring Company sought to revolutionize the educational sector with the idea of an experimental school, which encourages and builds critical understanding.

Elon Musk, in an interview with a Beijing TV channel, once said

 “I have my own school, in which there aren’t any grades like Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. Children will go and in the same grade at the same time similar to an assembly line because everyone has different choices & abilities.”

About the School

Elon started the school in California in 2014 naming it Astro Nova School. The school is completely funded by Musk. The school offers online classes for elementary and middle school students.

Inside the school, assessments are related to areas such as critical thinking & personality development. Problems related to real-life situations are assigned, to check a student’s ability, and thinking.

The Admission Process

If a candidate wants to get admitted into this institute, they have to submit an application form. They also have to make a short video response to the critical problem titled -“The Lake Conundrum.”

After getting selected, the candidate is invited to the school for a series of interviews the results of which determine whether the candidate is admitted.

How well Musk’s School is going?

After 2014, the school has grown with more than 30 students aged 7 to 14 years old. The students participate in all curriculum activities which revolve around their likings. Every candidate has the autonomy to choose their subjects.

The Principal of the Astra Nova School, Joshua Dahn, said

 “The School will bring a revolution in the education system as Tesla has.”

It will be interesting to see what progress and achievements the Astra Nova School can acquire in the coming future.


A Light on Gene Editing

The human body is an amazingly complex structure, consisting of several
biological organ systems working together carrying out specific functions
necessary for survival. The proper working of these systems of the living body either directly or indirectly depends on the correct expression of the genomic sequences. Any modifications or mutations in these gene sequences are emphasized in the functioning of the consecutive cells, eventually affecting the phenotype of the organism.

What does a Gene mean?

A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity, composed of DNA. In humans, approximately 20,000 genes are arranged peculiarly in the chromosomes. Their expression governs the phenotype of an organism. That indicates, to obtain a desired trait in an organism, gene editing is an impactful weapon.

Gene editing is looked upon with great interests when it comes to the prevention and treatment of human diseases. Establishment of genetic engineering megaproject, created the possibility to isolate and clone any piece of DNA and enhanced the availability of easier and fastest techniques for determining DNA sequences. A very ambitious project of sequencing the human genome was launched in the year 1990. This Human Genome Project (HGP) was called a megaproject. It was a 13- year project coordinated by the U.S Department of Energy and The National Institute of Health, got completed in 2003. This project has cast the backbone for successful gene-editing.

From Research Perspective:

Knowledge about the effects of DNA variations among individuals can lead to revolutionary new ways to diagnose, treat, and someday prevent the thousands of disorders that affect human beings. Thus gene or genome editing forms a very significant area of research in recent times.
Several approaches to genome editing have been developed. A recent one is known as CRISPR-Cas9 which is short for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats associated with protein 9, which has generated a lot of excitement in the scientific community because it is faster, cheaper, more accurate, and efficient than other existing genome editing methods. Ethical issues arise while using CRISPR because it is used to alter human genomes. It may cause cells to lose their cancer-fighting ability, and that it was way more detrimental to genes than before. Thus are currently made illegal in many countries.

In conclusion :

At present time, genome editing is done primarily to understand and tackle the disease causing reasons using cells and animal models for study. Though critics warn against the unpredictable impact on human health and the environment, preliminary results from one of the earliest clinical trials of CRISPR-Cas9 have provided the evidence for the technique being safe and feasible for treating human diseases. As a result, vast new horizons have opened up in genetic engineering which has significantly decreased the human mortality rate and enhanced the research advancement.
